Feeling Puny

October 31, 2006 0 comments

I guess our weekend trip to Rim Rock left me with a cold. My head feels huge, my nose is sore from blowing it so much, and I can't stop coughing! Sure, I know, I should have my butt in bed resting instead of writing, but that's not possible at the moment. Having Asthma makes my cold ten times as bad. When I lay down in bed, I can't breath, and the only thing I do is cough. So, since I can't get to sleep, I figure I'm better off doing what I love best -- writing!

Many of you already know about my blog at MySpace. My blog there will keep you up-to-date with my latest writing news, and today, I have posted on that blog. If you head over to my blog at MySpace, when you leave here, you will find links to a couple of my newly published articles. In addition, you will also find links to my daily updates on "As the World Turns." As a matter of fact, I will post an excerpt from all my ATWT updates, along with a link to the entire update, each day on my blog at MySpace. So, if you watch ATWT, or if you like to be keep up-to-date with the soap opera, then visit my blog at MySpace every day for the link to that day's update. Not a fan of ATWT? No problem, you may still want to visit my blog at MySpace for links to articles I've published recently, special offers and freebies (when available), and a whole lot more!

That will do it for tonight. I hope the next time I blog I will be back to my normal self, because I hate being sick.

Weekend Trip to Rim Rock With the Kids

October 30, 2006 0 comments

This weekend my husband and I took the kids to Rim Rock to enjoy the beauty of the fall colors. Rim Rock is about a 30 to 35 minute drive from our home, and since the kids were asking to go we all loaded in the mini-van and headed to Rim Rock.

Rim Rock in Hardin CountyWhile at Rim Rock, the kids had a ball, and we all enjoyed the magnificent view! The leaves were yellow, red and orange. The weather was a tad bit cool, but we didn't mind. My youngest son wanted to climb on every cliff he saw. I did allow him climb some of the smaller rocks that weren't far from the ground, but I stopped him from climbing the taller cliffs. It had rained the day before, so I knew the cliffs would be wet and slippery, and that's why I didn't let him get to close to the edge of the high cliffs. You just have to know my youngest son, he loves to climb things. When they play in the yard, I know I can always find him in the tree.

If you live near Rim Rock, or if you're planning a trip to Southern Illinois soon, you've just got to take a drive to Rim Rock. It's so beautiful this time of year! Rim Rock is located on Karbers Ridge Blacktop.

On another note, if you're a writer too, I would like to let you know about a call for writers. As most of you may already know by now, I am a writer for Soaps, and currently, Soaps is looking for back-up writers for all soap operas, and also "Ugly Betty." If you would like to know more about this postion, click here for more details.

That will do it for today. Until next time, take care and God bless you and yours!

Taking a Trip Soon!

October 24, 2006 0 comments

Back in June 2004, my husband and I got married, but because of his work and mine, we were unable to take a honeymoon. Instead, after our wedding, my mom took the kids and we went into town, rented some movies, ordered a couple pizzas, headed home, watched movies and ate pizza. Nope, not what you'd call a honeymoon.

Just the other day my husband surprised me with some news. He told me this winter we were going to finally take the honeymoon we never got. He knew while planning the wedding I wanted to go to Gatlinburg, TN and enjoy the Smokie Mountains. I had plans to rent one of those cabins too. However, as I stated above, we were not able to take the honeymoon because of our careers, and also because our finances at that time wouldn't allow.

I was excited when he delivered the news, and it made me smile when he said we would go to Gatlinburg and rent a cabin with a hot tub and the works. I still can't believe it! Neither my husband nor I have ever really taken what you would call a "vacation." We have been through Tennessee on our way to North Carolina at least three times, but it wasn't what you'd call a vacation. We went there to visit his kids twice, and the last time -- about two years ago -- we went to NC, because his kids were involved in a car accident. Other than a few scratches, bruises and soreness, the kids were okay, but he wanted to go so he could check on them and I understood completely. So see, these are the only trips we've ever made, and we were gone for three days at the most, so no, I really wouldn't call those trips a vacation.

Anyway, back to Gatlinburg... He said we would stay a week. He also said in the winter a lot of the museums and things aren't open, but he said we would go back again in the spring. I love Dolly Parton, but he did tell me Dollywood isn't open in the winter; shucks :( It doesn't matter though. As long as I get to spend an entire week with him, and finally get a honeymoon, not to mention a much-needed vacation, I don't mind not visiting Dollywood. I do, however, hope some places are open. I'd love to visit Cooter's Place, the Guinness World of Records Museum, Hollywood Star Cars Museum and many of the other interesting and unique attractions in and around Gatlinburg.

I will be taking my digital camera along and my notebook to take notes. Yep, when I return I hope to write some articles about my visit, and maybe some reviews of the cabins we'll stay in, places we'll eat, etc. Nevertheless, since I will be on my honeymoon, I won't do much writing at all (hard habit to break), but I will take a few notes to remember things.

Right now, when I'm not writing articles, soap opera update, or etc., I'm exploring the Internet for attractions in Gatlinburg. I'm also looking for discounts. Hmmm... I'm thinking being a writer with plans to write about my visit could help with the discount department. If you're a writer and have any tips to pass along on getting discounts, please let me know; my contact information is on my Web site, or you can post a comment and let me know that way. Oh yes, if you know of any other unique and interesting places around Gatlinburg that you've visited and can recommend, by all means, let me know about them.

Well, now that I've shared my excitement with you I'll go, but you can bet I'll blog more about the upcoming trip, and I'll also blog about the honeymoon/vacation when we return. No date has been set yet, but when it is, I will let you know, because I won't be blogging during that time.

Returning to Soaps.com Today

October 23, 2006 0 comments

I've not been writing the updates at Soaps for two weeks, because I had to take some time off to get to know the characters better. It takes a little time to learn everybody on soap operas, and I certainly didn't want to upset my fans by getting any more names wrong :(

Since I've been watching for a while now, it should be better, and I will be returning to write the recaps today. So, if you're a fan of As the World Turns, join me after 2:00 pm (CST) at Soaps, today, for my update. And of course, make sure you tune in to the show, or at least tape it, because today's show should be a good one. For one, they will be saying goodbye to Benjamin Hendrickson (Detective Hal Munson). Character, Hal Munson left the real world back in July. As stated in the article at Soaps, "it has been reported that he had committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head." As the World Turns will say goodbye to his character today, and I'm sure the mouring from the other actors won't be "acting," because many were saddened when they received the news of his real death. He will be missed!

When the show ended on Friday, they left us wondering what would happen to Simon. In the bar on Friday, Simon bumped into Spero and his men, Spero told Simon, referring to Carly, "the blonde went to the cops, so now you're going to pay for it." Spero's men had already beaten Simon once on Thursday for trying to return the money he borrowed, and now he may take another thrashing. Tune in today to find out what will happen to Simon.

There's lots more that happened on Friday's show, and like all Fridays, the show always ends to leave you guessing over the weekend, and anxiously awaiting Monday :)

New E-book in the Works

October 20, 2006 2 comments

I'm going to make tonight's post as short as possible, because I have three articles to write and turn in for payment. I just wanted to give you a heads-up on a new e-book I'm working on. This e-book will be for those of you thinking about starting an e-zine. The e-book will basically be a guide telling you how to create a successful e-zine. I haven't come up with a title for this yet as I'm still brainstorming on that one, but I do have the outline for the e-book and am ready to begin. I'll tell you how to get subscribers, find content for your e-zine and much more.

The project is still fresh, but as things progress further I may offer you a sneak peek inside. If there's any thing at all you want to know about creating and publishing your own e-zine, please let me know and I will take them into consideration for the content.

Keep watching for updates on this new e-book in the works!

Latest Trends

October 18, 2006 0 comments

Monday I completed my article on the latest trends in electronics, but while I researched the article I became very interested in everything. I had to research trends, or in this case, new inventions. Anyway, I can't begin to tell you how many unique and weird inventions there are nowadays. For example, in the article I did I mention a Sonic Bed. This Sonic Bed is in London. The Sonic Bed allows you to "feel the music" -- literally! In addition to the Sonic Bed, Japan has come up with a robot that recognizes several wines, cheeses and hor d'oeuvres. This robot can also name the brand of wine and recommend foods that go well with that wine. How cool is that?

There are other inventions too, and some of them are not as much unique as they are helpful. I came across a trend I thought would be very helpful, and especially helpful to folks working midnight shifts. The Drive Master Alert. The Drive Master Alert attaches to your ear and alerts you when you start to doze off behind the wheel. Helpful? I think so.

If you would like to read the article I did on the latest electronic trends, click here.

Before I go I would like to let you know that my Web site has a new look. I guess I got tired of the current colors, so I changed the color of the site to give it a softer color tone. I like this color better, and personally, I think I like my site better this way too. Drop by and see just what I'm talking about. Then, after you're finished browsing my site come back here and post your comments to let me know what you think of my new look and color. Do you like these colors better than the old ones?

Hugs,

A Fun Weekend!

October 15, 2006 0 comments

This weekend we had some fall fun! Fall is a wonderful time for roasting hotdogs and marshmallows over the fire, and that's just what my family and I done this weekend.

My oldest son turned 12 on the 6th of this month, and usually we throw him an indoors birthday party, but this year we decided to make the party more fun by roasting hotdogs and marshmallows over a fire built in the firepit we had outside. The weather was perfect for this type of event, and all three of my kids just love wienie roasts.

The weekend before the birthday party I called the family and invited them as always, and this time I told them to bring their lawn chairs because this time around we would be having a wienie roast. Of course I gave the older folks the option of sitting inside where it was warmer, but everyone stayed outside and we all had a ball! There were seven adults and six children in attendance. We all enjoyed hotdogs, marshmallows, chili, chips, birthday cake, and believe it or not, ice-cream (at least the ice-cream didn't melt).

My husband kept the fire nice and toasty, and all the kids, including the birthday boy, had a blast! The kids drove my brother's four-wheeler around the yard, played games and jumped on the trampoline. Well, all the kids expect for my daughter jumped on the trampoline. She's still recovering from her trampoline accident, and she still vows she'll never get on one again. Even with my rule of one at a time, she still said she was not getting on a trampoline again. Hmmm, maybe I was wrong, maybe she won't get back on one.

At around 9:00 p.m. the party ended. All the adults exchanged hugs and went home, and I was left with a house full of five kids :) But I must say, other than being just a tad bit noisy, they were all good and went to bed when told.

Need ideas for your little child's fall birthday party? A wienie roast is pretty easy on the budget and fun for everyone! And, may I add... the big pot of chili goes over well too ;)

Medical Emergency in the Family

Thursday night my writing was put on hold due to a medical emergency in my family.

About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5, my cell phone rang and the caller ID showed it was my ex-husband. I answered the phone and the only thing I heard was "I'm headed to the hospital." My cell phone went dead. (I've been having problems with the battery on my cell.)

I knew it was one of my kids, and I could hear panic in his voice, plus, he was very quick with what he said. At this point, I knew nothing else. The only thing I knew was which hospital to go to. Because it was one of the kids I got scared and started searching for my husband's phone, but I was too scared and couldn't find it. Immediately, I woke my husband up and told him about the phone call and asked where his phone was. He told me and jumped out of bed. As I was getting ready to call my ex-husband back, on a phone that worked, my phone rang again. I answered it, and when I did I wanted to make sure I got the words out that my phone was messed up bad, so if I lost him again he would call my husband's phone.

I did get the message to him, and then I heard him say, "I'm headed to the hospital." I already knew this much. I wanted to know which kid and how serious it was.

"Who is it? What happened?"
"It's Cyndie. She's hurt her neck jumping on the trampoline."

The phone started to break up, so I knew I was about to lose connection again.

"Okay, I'll meet you at the hospital," I said as I ended the call.

I relayed the message to my husband. Then, I quickly changed from my nightgown to clothes. I didn't put on a bra, didn't brush my hair, nor did I put socks on. Instead, I threw on pants and a shirt, stuffed my hair brush in my purse and grabbed my shoes on the way out the door. Since my husband was driving (I was in no shape to drive at that point), I knew I could brush my hair and put my shoes on in the van.

On the way to the hospital, I thought it was odd they were jumping on the trampoline at that time of the night, and I mentioned this to my husband. He said, maybe she got hurt earlier in the day and it got worse, so he thought it best to take her to the hospital. I told him that was possible, but at that point the only thing I knew was how she got hurt, and I knew it was a neck injury. The neck injury is what scared me, because from my past experience in the medical field I knew those could become serious, especially if the person injured is moved, and when one of the kids are hurt we always drive them to the hospital.

Twenty minutes later we arrived at the hospital. (I had calmed down a little at this point.) When I walked through the doors I turned to my right, and I almost cried when I saw her. She was lying on a stretcher, with a back board underneath her, two blankets piled on top of her (she was cold), and a huge collar around her neck -- a sight no mother really wants to see.

I didn't expect what I saw, usually when we went to the hospital for one of the kids they would be sitting up on the side of the bed and the nurse would be with them. However, this time was different. She wasn't sitting up, but there was a nurse beside her. I guess my ex could see the fear in me, and that's when he told me they had to call the ambulance. He went on to say he knew it wasn't a good idea not to move her, so he left her on the trampoline and a friend of his called 9-1-1 while he stayed there. I also found out there was seven kids, including my two boys, jumping on the trampoline at once, and he said the kids were playing "popcorn." Naturally, I asked what "popcorn" was and he told me. I told him at the house they have a rule... one at a time on the trampoline, but I can't control what they do when they're at their dads. And yes, they were jumping on the trampoline at that time of night, but the only thing I cared about at the moment was my daughter.

My daughter told me her little brother accidentally stepped on her neck and it popped. She also said she blacked out for a few minutes. She was scared (she's never liked needles, doctors, etc.), and she asked them not to put the IV in, so they didn't. They also requested no sirens and just used the lights.

When the ambulance pulled away, all the kids were crying, and my son cried because he thought he'd hurt his sister bad (he's 10). To top everything off, the next day (Friday) my oldest son would be turning 12 (what a birthday).

Cyndie told me she didn't like the ambulance ride, and she also said she was never gonna get on a trampoline again. I laughed when she said she'd never get on a trampoline again, and I told her, "We'll see."

We waited for an hour as they took her for a Catscan. After the Catscan, they brought her back in, the doctor checked her out, and we waited for the results (they had sent the results over the Internet for someone to read). A few minutes later, the doctor came back in and told us the Catscan results were okay. He said she would be sore for a while and gave her some Motrin for the pain (she's 13 going on 14). He also said if she got worse to bring her back in.

I'm very thankful she's okay! She is sore, and she says her back hurts a lot too. She also reports that the medicine doesn't work. If those kids learned one thing from this whole ordeal, I hope it was not to jump with too many people on the trampoline at one time.

I guess I may have over-reacted a little to the whole situation by panicing, but I suppose all parents do when their child's hurt and they don't know all the details. Plus, part of me still thinks the Catscan wasn't enough. I can't understand why they didn't do an X-ray, or send her home in a neck brace, but I'm not a doctor so I'll have to trust a "doctor's" judgement, and hope she heals fine.

The whole point of this story... If your child has a trampoline have a rule of one at a time on the trampoline. It can still be fun. My kids have even made-up a game they can play with this rule at my house that still makes the trampoline fun, and I'll share the game with you if you want to know (post your comment and let me know).

Third Day Writing for Soaps

October 5, 2006 0 comments

Yesterday was my third day writing for Soaps, and I believe I am finally learning the system. Hooray!
I had to ask for help one time because I couldn't recall how to post the title picture, and the editor refreshed my memory. Now, when I go to post the update for this afternoon's show I'm almost certain I'll be able to do it all on my own... I'll be sure to keep you updated :)

Since I'm on the subject, did you catch yesterday's episode of "As the World Turns?" If you didn't then you missed Lily's ghostly visit from Rose. The ghostly visit wasn't the only excitement, though. It got really interesting when Lily's memory started to come back. Here's a quick excerpt of my update from Soaps...

Lily continues to remember things. She remembers her and Luke were angry with one another, but she can't remember why. She has a flashback, a flashback of when she fell down the stairs.

"I remember everything," Lily tells Luke.

Luke swallows hard and takes a deep breath.

Miss the show? Would you like to know what's going to happen this afternoon on "As the World Turns?" Want to read the rest of the update? Head over to Soaps and you can catch the update, a small spoiler and more.

BAD Day

October 3, 2006 0 comments

Yesterday was my first day to write the updates for Soaps.com. I was eager and ready to get started until it came time to post the update. When I went to post my first update on "As the World Turns," I ran into a few problems. First, the update (a.k.a. recap) of yesterday's episode was suppose to be on the Web site 4:00 p.m., and I had just finished writing out the update at that time. I knew right then I was late, and the editor was already communicating with me through ICQ; in case I needed help posting through their system (I was new to the system).

I started to panic. It was my first day, and I didn't want to make a bad impression on my first day. Besides, I had a reputation for meeting deadlines on time, and I was hurting it by being late.

I logged into the admin area to post my update, and I copy and pasted (from Notepad) my recap of the episode, but as soon as I went to send it through the editor ICQed me to tell me it wasn't correct. Turns out, she sent me this message at the same time that I was starring at a screen that asked me to add the new paragraph. My panic suddenly turned worse!

The editor was kind and she said it happens to many writers on their first day. She was even kind enough to call me on the phone to walk me through the system, and finally, at around 7:00 p.m. I had the update posted, the pics were up and the job was complete! I was very thankful Chrissi was there to walk me through. She didn't have to take time out of her busy schedule to help me figure out --what turned out to be -- a simple system, but she did take time to help and for that, I was grateful!

Chrissi is wonderful to work with, and I must say, I think she has a lot more patience than I do, because I lost patience with myself yesterday. All of this just goes to show you editors are willing to help. After all, they're people too.

Their system wasn't my only delay though. My other holdup was writing the update. I'm so use to writing updates on other shows, and those updates can be rather lengthy, but for Soaps, I found their updates aren't as long, so I worked as fast as I could to take about 10 pages of content and put it into three or four pages. To top it off, I have a habit of going back to edit what I write, and I done that too.

After I got everything done I was ashamed of myself, and I was down in the dumps for the rest of the evening. I'll admit, I almost threw my whole writing career out the window last night, but when I went back to Soaps a few hours later I read some of comments on my update, and this made me feel a whole lot better. I actually thought my writing would be awful because I had shortened it, but I guess I underestimated myself.

I'm now learning to write a little less while still keeping it interesting, and I'm still learning bits and pieces of their system. Although, I am happy to report I got the update posted on time today and done over 80% of system on my own. Chrissi did help me post the pictures, but I believe I can do it all on my own tomorrow. Drop by again and I'll let you know if that 80% increases to 100% :)
