Connecting With My Characters

October 30, 2008 3 comments

While writing the second edition of Help From Above, I've found myself really connecting with my characters. Sometimes I feel as if I am that character. In fact, I feel as if I have multiple personalities. Seriously, I really do! When I write the dialogue for each character, I become that character. Then I write the reply for the other character, and I become that character. For instance, George is an ill-tempered man, and when he gets angry with the angel, Ronald, I feel his anger and it tends to reflect through my dialogue. Ronald, on the other hand, does his best to be gentle, so when I put Ronald's reply to George into words, I feel Ronald's gentleness and apply it to his dialogue.

Is all this connecting with my characters good or bad? I'm not sure. Weird? Maybe. Nevertheless, that's exactly what has been happening as I write the second edition of Help From Above. The good thing is when I find myself in this... state of mind I guess you'd call it... the words flow like water from a faucet from my fingertips. I'll go back and edit later, of course, but as weird as it sounds, it's a wonderful feeling, and I think it will reflect throughout my novel. Whether that's good or bad, I'll just have to wait and see, but I'm sure my readers will let me know one way or the other. But honestly, that's how I feel and I don't know how else to describe it other than it's as if the characters jump into my body and take over.

Have you ever felt this way? In what ways do you connect with your characters?

Overcoming Shyness

October 28, 2008 0 comments

Every since I was a kid I've been shy. I had friends growing up and still do, but until I get to know someone well, I don't talk much. I'm not rude. I'll speak when spoken to, but I prefer to escape everything -- life and problems -- through my writing. I've always been this way, and many of my readers have complimented my writing. Many of them often ask, "Why can't I find your books in the bookstores in your area?" Most often my response is because I've not taken the time to step away from my desk long enough to visit local bookstores and speak with the managers about stocking my books. While that reply is the truth, it's only half the truth. The other half of the truth is I'm too shy to approach the managers. It's not that I don't know what to say or how to sell myself. The problem is I don't want to appear pushy. While I may not be going door to door in my neighborhood, I feel as if several doors would be shut in my face, and I just can't seem to muster up the courage to ring the doorbell. I guess I was born with a shyness gene.

I know that in order for God to bless me with many sales, I have to overcome this shyness to market my books locally. I think I do great marketing through the Internet, because I'm not face-to-face with anyone -- I do it all through words, which is what I do best. I just need to learn how to overcome shyness to get the word out locally.

I've been considering investing in a copy of C. Hope Clark's The Shy Writer, but I'm not one-hundred percent sure if her book actually tells how to overcome shyness to market your books locally. So if any of you have read The Shy Writer, please comment and let me know if that's what the book teaches and what you thought of the book. Did you find The Shy Writer helpful?

I've been spending my weekends re-writing Help From Above, and I can hardly wait until I finish it and have it edited by a professional so I can re-publish it and implement some of my new book marketing ideas. Local bookstores, libraries, gift shops, Christian stores, local speaking engagements and etc. are a part of my new book marketing campaign for the second edition of Help From Above. Since the locals are included in my book marketing campaign, it's essential that I learn how to get over my shyness.

Were you once a shy writer who learned how to conquer the shyness to market your books locally? If so, I invite you to comment and share any tips that you feel could help me. On the other hand, why not write the article and submit it to Coffee Break for Writers. I'm editor of that e-zine, so if your article is well written and teaches shy writers how to overcome shyness to market their books locally, I'd be glad to accept the article for publication in Coffee Break for Writers. Coffee Break for Writers buys one-time rights and pays $15 for unpublished articles. Better yet, if you think you can write the article, e-mail me at editor(at)coffeebreakforwriters(dot)com and let me know you'd like the assignment. Be sure your e-mail includes a few of the tips that you'll discuss in your article.

Writers: How to Share Your Blessings

October 21, 2008 0 comments

Screenshot from Facing the Giants - an inspiring movie for all ages.

I know the Lord blessed me with the ability to write, so when I share my blessings with others, it's my way of thanking the Lord for His many blessings. Not only do I share my blessings through writing, but I also share them in other ways.

Share Your Blessings by Helping Others

The Lord expects us to share our blessings with others, and to do that we should share our knowledge. We can share our knowledge by mentoring aspiring writers and speaking in public. Not only will the knowledge we share help and inspire others, but we'll feel good about ourselves afterwards. Besides, who knows, what you shared could spread when those you taught, helped and inspired goes on to share the blessing you helped them achieve with even more folks looking for a little assistance and inspiration.

Give Generously and With Sincerity

2 Corinthians Chapter 9 Verses 7 through 8 in the King James Version says, "Let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work." Basically, what this means is we must give out of generosity and with sincerity, and if we do, God will bless us even more.

How can we give financially to others out of generosity and with sincerity? Simple, by donating a portion of the profits from our writing to charity. Now I know many of you are probably thinking you don't make enough and won't donate until you can give a large amount to charity, because you'd be embarrassed to give a small amount when other well-known authors and writers can donate six figures. I've thought the same thing, but the truth is, the Lord only expects us to give what we can, and then later He may bless us with even more to give. If the day does come when the Lord blesses you with a large amount, then by all means, give even more, but until then, the Lord will be proud of you even if you're only able give $10.

Help Those in Need

Normally, I don't write for free, and yes, I know I said the Lord expects us to give, but we do that by giving to charity, as well as in other ways. The Lord knows we have to make a living, and in order to provide for our family, we have to charge for our services. However, a time may come when an organization that also gives is in need. When that time comes, we could be gracious enough to donate our services. Whether it's an article, brochure or short newsletter, it would be okay since it's for a good cause. By a good cause, I'm referring to organizations that help others. For example, maybe there's a church trying to raise funds to help a family in need, feel free to donate your writing services to help them out.

Back in November 2005 I donated a personal essay to the Stories of Strength anthology. A group of writers and editors wrote and published the anthology to help victims of natural disasters. When I donated my personal essay, I knew that 100% of the proceeds from each sale would go to disaster relief charities in the region, so I felt that was a good cause and was glad to be a part of it. In fact, not only did I donate a personal essay, but I donated my time and marketing experience to help promote the launch of the anthology, and I bought a copy to help support organizations such as the American Red Cross.

Share the Word

Have you written and published a children's book with a Christian message? Inspire and share the word with children by visiting hospitals. During your visit, read your book to the children, and then give some more by taking along a gift for each child. A great and affordable gift is a small guardian angel pin or a small teddy bear with angel wings.

Go ahead and start sharing your blessings today. Just as soon as you begin sharing those blessings, you'll feel good about yourself. Moreover, the Lord will bless you; it may not be when you want him too, but with faith and patience, He will bless you.
"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him." (Psalm 36:7; King James Version).

Christian Fiction News: Rewriting Help From Above

October 13, 2008 0 comments

Other than writing for my clients, I've been rewriting my Christian novel entitled Help From Above. The good news is I'm seriously considering posting the rewrites -- a little at a time -- on my MySpace blog. This would allow you to read the revised edition, which I plan to have republished. In fact, you'd actually get a sneak preview for free. The only thing I'd ask for in return is that you'd comment to give me your feedback and/or suggestions. Of course a review would be greatly appreciated as well, but I wouldn't expect you to send me your review until the entire novel has been posted.

Before I go ahead with my plan for the free sneak preview, I'd like to put it to a vote. So, please help me by voting below to let me know if you'd like to read Help From Above without charge, and if you'd be willing to leave a comment at my MySpace blog giving me your feedback and/or suggestions. It only takes a few seconds to vote, and I'd really appreciate your input so I'd know if it's worth my time to make the entire revised edition available for your reading pleasure.

Time For A Change

October 6, 2008 3 comments

I guess you could call this my personal testimonial to the Lord; however, it will also be for you, my readers as well...

Very early Sunday morning I realized my purpose in life was to write more words that will inspire and/or touch my readers in some way. I've known from the beginning of my writing career that God blessed me with the talent to write, and I've always tried to thank him for that blessing by writing words that would inspire and touch others. Nevertheless, like all writers -- aspiring and veteran -- I have to put food on the table for my family. In order to help my family, I have searched for writing gigs and God blessed me with those gigs, but some of those writing assignments involve a different genre of writing, a genre that's hard to put inspiring words into, so I've decided to start writing my short stories again and selling them to publications. These short stories will be where I'll write more inspiring words that I hope you'll find some comfort it.

In addition to the above-mentioned change, I've also started rewriting Help From Above, my Christian fiction novel. The storyline won't change, and while much of the novel has already inspired many, the changes I have planned for the novel should inspire even more than it already has. Once I complete the rewrite and republish it, you'll be the first to know, because I'll make that announcement here on my blog, before I send out the press release.

Don't think this change has caused me to give up my current clients. Those clients were answered prayers and they help put food on the table for my family, so I'll continue to write for those clients. Besides, I do enjoy writing the articles I submit to them, too. So where's the change? In addition to remaining dedicated to my current clients, I'll work my other projects into my schedule. Those projects, of course, will be the inspirational short stories I plan to write and pitch to publications, as well as the rewrite of Help From Above, which I've already worked into my schedule.

I truly believe this is my purpose on Earth, or should I say God's plan for me: to write more words that will inspire, touch and help others in some way. I tell ya, I felt the strong presence of the Lord Sunday night when I asked him, "Lord, is that what I'm supposed to do?" When I felt his answer, I thanked him. Therefore, if you're still reading my blog, please continue reading for updates on how things will be going. Then when I get one of my inspirational stories published and finish the rewrite of Help From Above, you'll read about it here. If you haven't already, just subscribe to my RSS feed or via e-mail to stay informed.

If you'd like to interview me about this change, Help From Above, or anything related to my writing life and how I use faith and prayer to get through it all, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm also open to being a chat guest or speaking on your radio show. I would love to inspire or give hope to your readers and/or listeners as well. And yes, there will be a place for interviews, speaking and etc. on my busy schedule, too; it's all part of what God has in store for me.

Until the next post, take care of yourself, follow what you feel the Lord wants you to do, and by all means, don't forget to give Him thanks each and every time He blesses you.

By the way, I'd like to say happy birthday to my son who just turned 14 today. He's another one of my many blessings from the Lord. So, happy birthday, JB! Mom loves ya!
