Sharing a Halloween Memory

October 31, 2007 2 comments

Happy Halloween, friends! Just a short post today since I still have some more writing to do. Other than wishing you a happy and safe Halloween, I would like to invite you to read a Halloween memory that I just had published at Associated Content. I thought this would be the perfect time to invite you to read my Halloween memory since it is Halloween. So, all I ask for is just a few minutes of your time to read and rate my short Halloween story: Halloween Tradition: Trick-or-Treating at Grandma's House.

If you find my memory entertaining, I invite you to share it with everyone you know on this Halloween day. To share my Halloween memory with your friends and family, you can click "Email to Friends" at the beginning of the true story, or you can post a link to it from your Web site, blog, or if you have a Myspace and/or another social networking profile, send the link to everyone in your friends list. I sure would appreciate any readers you send my way, because I chose to submit the story just to share my special memory with everyone.

Once you've finished reading my cherished Halloween memory, please rate it and leave me a comment there or here to let me know your thoughts, and please encourage your friends and family to do the same. I love hearing from my readers!

Blog Review: Wahm Café

October 30, 2007 0 comments

As a writer I enjoy writing (of course), and I love visiting other writers' blogs as well as blogs on other topics. Therefore, I've decided that from time-to-time I would like to write blog reviews here so that I can share some of those helpful blogs with y'all. With that said, my first review will be about a blog I discovered early this morning -- the Wahm Café blog.

Dianne, a wife and mother of two kids, runs Wahm Café. Through her blog, she offers her readers a glimpse into her life as a work-at-home mom and entrepreneur. She presents resources and tips on her blog, and she invites her readers to contact her so she can share her knowledge about growing a home-based business.

Aside from the blog taking a little longer to load than I'm use to (I connect with DSL), I enjoyed reading some of Dianne's blog posts. One post I particularly enjoyed was My Favorite Wordpress Plugins. Since I just started using Wordpress to create Discover Southern Illinois, this post lead me to a couple free Wordpress plugins that I'll definitely add to Discover Southern Illinois.

I hope you enjoyed my first blog review, and if Wahm Café sounds like a blog you might enjoy, then I invite you to check it out.

On a final note, if you have a blog you'd like me to check out, comment and let me know about it. The blogs I enjoy are writing-related blogs, blogs by other writers, blogs that give SEO tips, blogs about using Wordpress, blogs about blogging and blogs that offer marketing advice. What I won't review -- nor will I visit -- are blogs containing nudity or pornography. I am a Christian woman and I do not enjoy those. I will also not approve your comment if it has a link such as this in it, because my children read my blog and I try to keep my blog's content suitable for children and teens as well.

Happy Monday!

October 29, 2007 0 comments

Happy Monday, friends! Well, I met my deadline for the 10 articles over the weekend and sent my invoice… hip, hip hooray! Now… well… it looks as if I'm back to the drawing board again. I'm still responding to writing jobs and crossing my fingers for another client, because as we all know, Christmas is right around the corner.

Since I've met my deadline and hopefully pleased a new client, I'm also back to working on Discover Southern Illinois. I pretty much have everything on the blog the way I want it for now, all except for the links within my blog entries. I seem to be stuck on this one, and I spent my entire Sunday afternoon playing with the CSS code in Wordpress to get it the way I wanted. However, because I don't know much about CSS or Wordpress, I can't quite figure this one out. Therefore, if you understand the CSS in Wordpress, please help (I'm on my knees begging). Here's what I've been trying to do: presently, the links in my blog entries are set for a dark gray color and they're not underlined. I want to change the font color to something different and would like a line under the links as well. Now, I know how to change a font color, and I know that the "text decoration" in the CSS should read "underline" instead of "none," but I don't know what part of the CSS to change. I've changed some, but that didn't work out and I had to change those back. Apparently, they weren't the link colors for my blog entries. If you can tell me what part of the CSS to change, I sure would appreciate it; just leave me a comment. The theme I'm using is Redie-30.

Once I get the above figured out, I plan to officially launch my blog by distributing a press release, which I hope to write within the next day or two. After that, I will be adding the information about my first writing workshop to my website, distributing a press release about it, promoting it, and then I'll open up registrations. I'm really excited about the writing workshop! I love teaching other writers about writing and sharing my knowledge, so these workshops will be right up my alley, and they'll allow me to get to know other writers on a more personal level.

That will do it for this wonderful Monday. I hope y'all have a great week!

My Crazy 8s

October 24, 2007 3 comments

Jenna Glatzer has tagged me for the Crazy 8s meme, so for those of you wanting to know even more about me, here it goes:

8 things I'm passionate about:
1. Like Jenna, I'm also passionate about being a mom as well as a step mom.
2. Writing, of course.
3. Helping others when I can.
4. Classic country and the older gospel hymns.
5. Reading my Bible as well as Christian fiction and romance books.
6. Reality TV.
7. Animals. I have two ferrets, two Pomeranians and a Blue Heeler.
8. Church.

8 things I want to do before I die:
1. Sell enough of my books and writing so that I can make a comfortable living and hubby doesn't have to work, and finally, enough to also be able to donate to charities often. If I ever reach that goal, the charities are at the very top of my list, and the first charity would be my church (Richland, located in Hardin County).
2. Meet Dolly Parton.
3. See my future grandchildren.
4. See each of my children and stepchildren get married.
5. Take a cruise with hubby.
6. See my house after it has been remodeled.
7. Learn how to play the piano with both hands instead of just one.
8. Take the honeymoon hubby and I never had.

8 things I say often:
1. Never give up on your dreams -- work toward them.
2. I love you.
3. God and his angels will keep you safe (I say this to my children all the time).
4. Quit reading blogs and get back to work. (Yes, I say this one to myself…LOL.)
5. Come and get it! (I say this when dinner's ready, and everyone in the house scrambles to the kitchen.)
6. Do I have to go grocery shopping?
7. I can't, I'm working right now.
8. Can you, please help me clean the house?

8 books I've recently read:
1. Dream or Destiny, by Lillie Ammann. (Not yet released. I had a review copy.)
2. Must Love Mistletoe, by Christie Ridgway.
3. North Carolina, by Terry Fowler.
4. When Love Comes Home (Love Inspired), by Arlene James.
5. The Sheik Who Loved Me (Intimate Moments), by Loreth Anne White.
6. Healing Hearts (Love Inspired), by Cheryl Wolverton.
7. Not Another New Year's, by Christie Ridgway.
8. The Carousel, by Richard Paul Evans.

8 songs I could listen to over and over:
1. Heaven's Just a Sin Away (The Kindles).
2. I Can Only Imagine (MercyMe). This one's on my MySpace profile.
3. I'll Stand by You (Carrie Underwood).
4. Jesus Take the Wheel (Carrie Underwood).
5. Go Rest High on a Mountain (Vince Gill).
6. Angels Among Us (Alabama).
7. Inside Your Heaven (Carrie Underwood).
8. I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton).

8 things that attract me to my best friends:
1. Their sense of humor.
2. Their honesty.
3. Their kindness.
4. They don't judge you.
5. Their fun to be around.
6. They offer encouragement.
7. They're always there to talk to, and they offer advice or a shoulder to cry on.
8. They look at what's on the inside and not the outside.

8 people I think should do Crazy 8s:
1. April Aragam.
2. Kathy Kehrli at Screw You!
3. Writer Mama, Christina Katz.
4. Michele L. Tune over at Writing the Cyber Highway.
5. Alicia Sparks from Writing Spark
6. … and anyone else who feels froggy or needs something to blog about.

That will do it for the Crazy 8s meme. Thanks for the tag, Jenna… I enjoyed it.

As always, friends, I shall return. I know, "Thanks for the warning, right?"

Deadlines to Meet Plus a New Blog Launch…

October 18, 2007 3 comments

Good news! I got a response from one of those writing jobs I applied for, and it looks as if I may have the job. I said, "may have," because my first assignment is a test. Don't worry, I'll get paid for the articles, they'll decide whether I get another assignment based on how I write the articles they've assigned for the first time… the pressure's on, but I'm confident I can do it. I also know I'm not going to make another big freelance writing mistake, because this time I'm still going to hunt for more writing jobs as a back up. In fact, this is the first time I've ever worked with this company, so I hope they pay, but we'll soon see. And if they don't pay, then I'll take the steps I'm supposed to take as well as alert all the writers I know; y'all will probably be the first to know. Let's just hope it doesn't have to resort to that. (*crossing fingers*) In addition, this writing job is nowhere near the income I earned with my last writing job, so I definitely have to keep searching.

Tonight I have two deadlines to meet. Therefore, I plan to keep this post as brief as possible. I have two articles to write with a 24-hour deadline, and then 10 more articles to write for the new client. The 10 articles have a 10-day deadline, but I want to try to get them completed and turned in a little earlier, so I can make a good first impression. Don't worry; I didn't take one of those "peanut" jobs. I know that must have been the first thought that ran through your head when I said "10 articles." I may be in desperate need of writing jobs right now, but I'm not going to resort to letting a company take advantage of us writers.

For my other bit of good news: I have launched a new blog! I've considered launching this new blog for a while now, and since I wanted to play around with Wordpress, I thought now would be the best time to launch the blog. Boy, do I ever have some learning ahead of me!

I launched Discover Southern Illinois late last night, and I played with it all night long and all afternoon. I chose a theme I like for now, and I've installed a widget that will allow my readers to subscribe to the comments, but I can't seem to get the text beside the check box, instead it wants to go below it…Errr… I'm very new to Wordpress, but I see many Wordpress bloggers with neat things and better features than Blogger, but now I'll have to learn how to get the widgets and features I want, as well as learn how to edit the blog. Blogger is a whole lot simpler, but Wordpress has better features.

Another problem I seem to be having is I don't want the blogroll to say blogroll, I want it to say something else, but I can't figure this one out. If anyone can help, I sure would appreciate it. Furthermore, if you could lead me to some blogs that can help me, that would be great, too. Feel free to peek at what I've done so far, but keep in mind it's a bit of a mess. I've not announced it anywhere but here, and I don't plan to announce it until I get it the way I want it. I've also only made my introduction post, but that was mainly to figure out how to post. If you really want to see the mess, go to Discover Southern Illinois. Once I get everything the way I want it, I'll let you know more about the blog.

So much for being brief…LOL… I'd better end here so I can get busy on those articles. I certainly don't want to miss any deadlines.

Lost in Stories

October 17, 2007 2 comments

Boy, did my plans for a nights work go down the tubes! Earlier this evening (or should I now say yesterday evening) I sent my cover letter and credentials out to several writing jobs that I qualified for. Once I completed that task, I began my nightly ritual of reading other writers' blogs. Yes, that has become an everyday task that I pen into my to-do list. In fact, it's the second task on the list.

Anyway, after I read the blogs by other writers, I didn't get anything else writing-related done. Why? Because I followed a link to read Michelle's short story at Common Ties, and from there I read other short stories. Then, before I knew it, I was so lost in the stories that I knew my work was not going to get finished.

I started off on the right foot, but I was sidetracked when I got lost in the stories I was reading at Common Ties. Oh well, I suppose we all need a night off every now and then, right? The problem, however, with taking a night off, was knowing I would have to make up for it (in this case) later on tonight, and it just makes my to-do list longer, because the entire to-do list from the night before made its way onto my new list. I'll just have to force myself to stay away from the stories tonight so I can get back to work.

Note to Michelle: I enjoyed Moses or Man? You wrote the story well and it held my attention to the very end. You keep writing and never give up on your dreams! I've always believed in angels, and you just may have met yours.

Struggle for Words

October 14, 2007 4 comments

For the past few weeks, I have had a terrible time trying to put words onto paper. I guess my brain froze up and wouldn't allow me to think, because the words just wouldn't flow! I got so darn aggravated with my brain and myself, and the more agitated I got, the worse my struggle for words became. I had several ideas that I had written down, so coming up with something to write about wasn't the problem. Instead, coming up with what to say was the major problem! This whole struggle for words hit me at bad time, but doesn't it always? It hit me at a time when I was working long hours to churn out query letters, cover letters and articles so I could find some freelance writing gigs to help get my family out of the financial rut we're in right now. Therefore, when this struggle for words hit me like a ton of bricks, everything came to a sudden halt! However, I'm happy to report that I didn't come to a halt, just my words. Regardless of the words not flowing freely, my butt remained in my chair, and my fingers remained on my keyboard… but nothing else happened. Moreover, the longer I sat with my eyes fixed on that stupid blinking cursor and a blank Word document, the worse my struggle for words became. Even though I fought my struggle for words, I will admit there were times I just wanted to scream, but I knew if I did, I would wake everyone in the house and probably the neighbors too.

Finally, late Friday night my struggle for words ended! When the blinking cursor made my struggle worse, each night I would still continue my usual search for freelance writing jobs. Then, after I applied for the freelance writing jobs I qualified for, I went to read other writers' blogs. Once I finished reading the other writers' blogs, I headed for Google to search for free short stories in genres I enjoy reading. (When I don't have a book to read, I search the Internet for some free reading; sometimes reading helps get the words to start flowing again.) Turns out all of this must have helped, because as I just mentioned, the words began to flow again, and I mean flow! On Friday night, words for an article ran rapidly through my head, and I knew I had to open Word and start typing as fast as I could. Within minutes, the article was complete, and I had no struggle at all for words. I was as happy as a child on Christmas morning!

I had been praying every since the struggle for words hit me. I asked God to help me overcome my obstacle, so when I completed the article Friday night, the first words that came out of my mouth was, "Thank you, Lord!" After all, I owed him that and much more. It may have taken him a few weeks to answer my prayer, but he did answer. They say that sometimes the Lord may not answer when we want him to, but if what we're asking for is in his plans for us and we have faith, he'll eventually answer. Of course, I knew all of this already from past prayers and talks with the Lord, but the thing I need to work on is patience. I guess that will be my next prayer -- a prayer for patience.

Until next time, may all your words flow freely, and may the Lord bless you with an answer to your prayer.

Writing Workshop Coming Soon

October 10, 2007 3 comments

Well, as most you loyal readers may already know, I LOVE and ENJOY helping others, especially fellow writers. When I first started writing many years ago, I only wished there was someone to help me. Of course, back then I didn't have Internet access, so availability to what's out there today wasn't there then. Therefore, I guess you could say I'm self-taught. I learned many things from reading writing-related books, and from reading books by my favorite authors. I also learned from trial and error. Now, more than 10 years later, with over 150 published articles, two published books and my own self-published e-zine for writers, I'd like to share all the knowledge I've learned thus far with my fellow writers through writing workshops. Not only do I plan to share what I've learned over the years, but I also plan to share the new techniques and secrets that I continue to learn today.

I will be offering all the writing workshops via the Internet. Offering my knowledge via the Internet will allow you to study at any time you desire, and best of all, you can study and complete assignments in your pajamas (or birthday suit) if that's what you feel comfortable doing. You should also be able to work any or all of the writing workshops into your budget, because all of them will be offered for under $200, and most of them under $150 (depending on the length). Furthermore, I'm going to take things a step further by offering a payment plan for those of you who can't afford to pay the entire fee at once, and you should have it paid in full just as the writing workshop is about to begin.

The first writing workshop will be Freelance Writing for Beginners. In the Freelance Writing for Beginners writing workshop, you'll learn what the normal pay is for a variety of writing services (blog writing, ghostwriting, etc.), where and how to promote your writing services, how to break into the markets, how to write effective query letters, how to research markets and potential clients, how to find clients and much more. This writing workshop will also offer free templates to help you get started as well as a free list of trade magazines that pay fair rates. In addition, all of my writing workshops will offer personal e-mail support -- and when time allows -- personal feedback. As a writer myself, I am dedicated to my clients, and as an instructor, I will be dedicated to my students, too.

The Freelance Writing for Beginners writing workshop is already in its final stages of planning, so keep watching my blog (or subscribe by e-mail or in a reader) to find out when registration opens. I'm hoping to be opening the registration within the next few weeks.

If you have any suggestions for future writing workshops, leave a comment or contact me from my website. I'm always willing to listen and consider your suggestions.

Birthday Party Fun

October 8, 2007 2 comments

Happy Columbus Day! As you know from a previous post, the weekend before last was my daughter's first homecoming. Well, this weekend we celebrated my oldest son's 13th birthday. Yes, that's right, my oldest boy became a teenager Saturday, and the weekend before last (also on a Saturday) my 14-year-old daughter attended her first homecoming dance. Boy, I really feel old now…LOL…

Aside from my growing youngins, the past few weekends were really fun and enjoyable. This weekend the family gathered at my house, and we all enjoyed the annual October wiener roast. Since JB (my oldest son) and Cyndie's (my daughter) birthday occurs during the cooler seasons, we make the wiener roasts an annual event. Of course, the kids enjoy it, so that's all that really matters, right? For my youngest son, Joe, his birthday's in March. Therefore, since March is a warmer season -- too warm for a wiener roast-- we usually visit Pounds Hollow. There we grill burgers, hot dogs and enjoy a day of swimming.

Next time you find yourself looking for a birthday party idea, consider a day of swimming if your child's birthday takes place on a warm month, and if your child's birthday falls on a cooler month, then have a wiener roast instead. It's fun for everyone and affordable as well. Since I'm giving out birthday party suggestions, I might as well take this time to invite you to read one of my articles, which relates to the subject. Go ahead and check out Planning a Fall Birthday Party for Your Child -- Sure to Be a Success, and then leave me your comments.

I suppose I'd better get back to my writing life now that the fun has ended… as least for another month anyway.

Next time I blog, I plan to reveal some news for all you writers out there, so stay tuned or subscribe to be notified as soon as the post is live.

Eight Random Facts About Me

October 4, 2007 8 comments

Both Michele and Kathy Kehrli tagged me for the Random 8 Meme. First, I must post the rules:

1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
2. List eight random facts about yourself.
3. Tag eight people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them).
4. Let them know they’ve been tagged by leaving them a comment on their blogs.

Now, here are eight facts that you may or may not know about me:

1. I despise driving, and thanks to Michele, I now know I'm not the only one out there who prefers to ride. ;)
2. I have a terrible fear of spiders. Eeek! I shiver just mentioning it.
3. My favorite food is Mexican. Yum!
4. Unlike most women, I don't like shopping, and I have always hated grocery stores.
5. I've been writing every since I was eight, and I wrote my first short story using only a pencil and paper when I was 10. The main character in that story was a boy I had a crush on in school…LOL… My writing has improved a lot since then, but it's always fun to dig out the stories I wrote back then.
6. I owned my own wholesale business, which I ran for six years.
7. I use to teach Sunday school; I love teaching children about God.
8. In person, I'm shy until I get to know you better.

According to the rules, I'm supposed to tag eight others for this meme. With that said, I tag April Aragam, Jenna Glatzer, Lillie Ammann, Lonnie Cruse, Chris Bibey, Michael Kwan, Writer Mama and Jenny Rough.

My Biggest Freelance Writing Mistake

October 3, 2007 5 comments

freelance writingIn the last blog post I made, I promised I would blog about the biggest mistake I made in my freelance writing career. Therefore, since I intend to keep my promise, that is what I will be blogging on today. So, Michele, since you did tag me for a meme, it will be my next blog entry, which I plan to enter either tomorrow or the next day. Thanks for the tag, and I'm looking forward to it very much!

The biggest freelance writing mistake I made was one I knew better than to make, but for some reason I didn't listen to the angel on my shoulder telling me, "Now, Misti you know you're not supposed to depend on this so you'd better fix the problem soon." Instead, I listened to the angel on the other shoulder -- the evil angel -- and he told me, "You're good to go. There's no reason to waste time right now, just keep on doing what you're doing." Errrr… I could kick myself in the butt for not following the advice of the good angel, but it's too late now.freelance writing jobs

I know you're dying to know what I did, even though I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I'll share it with you with the hopes that you'll learn from my mistake. You see, several months back I landed my first BIG freelance writing job. This freelance writing job put an additional $500 a month income into my pocket. Yes, for me that was big, and I was persistent in following-up with the editor for that job. However, as many freelance writers know, you can't always depend on the freelance writing jobs to last forever. Why? Well, because some companies, publications or etc. may not make it, some will pay for a while then one day stop paying, or something unexpected may pop up that causes you to lose that freelance writing job. With that said, you should ALWAYS have a few other clients as well, just in case one doesn't work out. With no other clients under your belt, if something happens that causes you to lose the only big freelance writing job you have, then you lose a big chunk of the income you've been depending on to pay bills, feed your family and etc..

As I said, I was persistent in following up on that job. When I first applied, I sent the editor my cover letter as well as clips to some of my past articles, which were relevant to the freelance writing job I replied to. Within 24 hours, the editor replied to tell me she loved my writing and my style, but unfortunately, she already had a writer for the job I applied for. However, she did tell me since she liked my writing, she would keep my information on file in case another freelance writing position came open. One week later as I was searching the job boards as usual, I ran across another freelance writing job opening by this editor. I remembered her saying she would keep my information on file, so I typed a quick e-mail to remind her of what she said, and then I let her know I was interested in the freelance writing job she had just posted. She did remember me, and to my surprise, I got the job and began work the following month! I worked hard to get this freelance writing job, because I wasn't making very much with the gigs I currently had under my belt, and of course, hubby was telling me, "You have to do something. I need help with the bills." The only income I had at the time was writing articles for Associated Content, which we all know doesn't pay a whole lot, and there were times when they didn't offer me what I believed to be a fair rate for non-exclusive rights, so I would decline their offer. Then there was the normal submission process, and as all writers know, this can produce several rejection letters. Furthermore, when you get an acceptance letter, sometimes you have to wait months for the payment to arrive. To make a long story short, I was only making around $200 a month, so I had to do something.

I was so excited about the new freelance writing job and the extra $500 that I failed to listen to the good angel telling me to keep on searching and applying for more freelance writing jobs as a back up. Moreover, the job I had taken required much more work than I had expected, so my time was limited. In fact, the work involved was worth more than $500 a month, but we needed the money, and $500 a month wasn't necessarily chump change.

I can honestly say that now I wished I hadn't listened to the evil angel, because hubby's complaining again, and now I have to start at the bottom. I think I got lucky last time getting that freelance writing job so quickly, because this time it seems like it's taking forever. I have applied to several freelance writing jobs in the past two months and still have nothing. I do get responses, but they tell me they hired someone with more experience, which is understandable. In addition, writing for Associated Content just isn't doing it for me. They have lowered their offers significantly since they launched their new pay for performance, and because of their unreasonable offers, I have been declining some. Don't get me wrong, the pay for performance is great on top of their already one-time offer, but I do believe they could go back to making at least halfway decent offers, because from what I hear, Associated Content makes a lot more money than they pay their writers. Hmmm… I think I'll research this a little more; I'm curious.

I think I've rambled long enough now, but I hope that my biggest freelance writing mistake has taught you not to depend on one freelance writing job -- no matter how much it pays. ALWAYS keep searching for other freelance writing jobs and applying to them, because you never know when the one you just got will no longer be there, and then you'll be in the same boat I am in now, if you too listened to the evil angel instead of the good one. Please, friends, don't make the same mistake I did.

PS
If you believe in prayer, please pray that the Lord will help me find the freelance writing jobs I need to feed my family of six -- three children, and including myself, three adults. I pray every night, but the more you have praying for you the better, right?

Oh, yes, before anyone asks, yes, I could go back to work and write too, but I don't think my Asthma will let me.

Family Talk

October 1, 2007 2 comments

I hope y'all had a great weekend. Saturday my husband (Kevin) and I dropped my daughter off at the high school for her first Homecoming. So, not only did I watch her grow up even more into the beautiful young lady she is, but also I helped her get ready for the Homecoming. She wanted to wear the dress I wore when I married Kevin, but I wasn't sure it would fit her. She said she loved it and really hoped she could wear it. Therefore, I pulled it from the closet, took the plastic off and she tried it on. Would you believe she could wear it! It was a little big, but thanks to my aunt's altering skills, she was able to wear the dress (see the pic of her above). The dress is covered in glitter, though the picture doesn't show it that well.

Cyndie said she had fun, and she said when they turned on the disco light the dress sparkled, which she really loved. I'm so glad she had a good time, but I'll admit, it's hard watching her grow up so quickly. In fact, I almost cried when I dropped her off at the school and seen just how beautiful -- and grown up -- she really was.

As for my stepdaughter, her mother called this morning to give us her address so we could write to her. She also reported that she's made it through the first few days of boot camp, and now she's fine. Her first few days were a little rough, but now she reports everything is just chipper.

Now that I've updated you on two members of the family, I think I'll go for now. In my next blog post I'll get back to my writing life. I will be blogging about the biggest freelance writing mistake I've made thus far. I want to do this, because I hope all you other freelancers out there will learn from my mistake. Until then, take care and God bless.

PS: If you've recently left a comment, I have went through and replied to the ones I thought needed a response.
