Break With a Good Book...

January 31, 2007 2 comments

Last weekend I found myself with a small case of writer's block. Yeap, there's that dreaded virus all writers try to avoid, but I couldn't avoid it, nor could I seem to shake it. It all started when I sat down at my computer to write, but low and behold I was gazing at a blinking cursor instead of words on the screen. Problem was I couldn't find the words to put there - my mind went totally blank! I couldn't believe it! I had managed to avoid this nasty virus for a year, and it decided to hit me after all that time. So, since I couldn't write, I surfed the Web a while, then decided since it was the weekend I would just take a break. In the past, breaks seemed to work for me, but other than a break, reading a good book by my favorite author also helped.

The very next afternoon (Saturday) I made a trip to the store and bought a book by my favorite author: Danielle Steel. Her writing inspires me, and her books keep me turning the pages. I have read so many of her books that I couldn't remember which ones I hadn't read... hmm... I wonder if there's a name for that one. Maybe reader's block? (LOL). Anyway, I chose "Toxic Bachelors." However, I hate to say it, because I've always enjoyed Ms. Steel's books, but I was rather disappointed with this one. Usually when I read one of her books I lose track of time because I can't put it down, but this time I stopped on the third page. It didn't grab my attention like her other books had. I will try to continue reading it with the hopes that it will get better, but I'm not sure if I can. Maybe she too had a case of writer's block when she wrote this one, and instead of taking a break she tried to write through it. If it gets better, though, I will let you know how it turns out.

Despite not being able to continue reading Ms. Steel's book, which usually helps my case of writer's block, by Monday things were getting better for me, and my brain was starting to work again. Little by little I'm getting it back, and I hope the dreaded writer's block stays away for good this time. :)

Tuesday Morning Ramblings

January 30, 2007 0 comments

I hope y'all are staying warm in your part of the neighborhood. Our furnace is running full blast here in Southern Illinois. It looks as if we're finally getting some more of that winter weather. I tell ya, this winter wasn't near as bad as last winter. One day it seems like its springtime with all the rain, and the next day it's cold again. The most snow we've had in my neck of the woods has been just enough to dust the ground. I love snow, but I don't think I will be seeing any this winter. Hmm… maybe next winter.

About an hour ago, I sent the Coffee Break for Writers e-zine out to all my subscribers. So, if you're one of those subscribers check your inbox, it should be there now. :) Other than working on the e-zine and writing for Soaps.com, I've also been busy updating at Myspace. If you haven't visited me at Myspace in a while, now's the time to drop by again, because I've added links to some of my most recent articles, and I've also added some new pics. There's a pic of my husband and I on our wedding day and some pics of the front covers of my books. Be sure to drop by and say hello.

I don't have a whole lot to say this morning, so I will let you get back to whatever you were doing. Keep checking back, because I'll blog again soon - as always. :) But for now, I think I'm going to go to bed to cuddle with hubby. Ahh, yes, another thing I love about winter - cuddling with the one I love for warmth. ;)

As always, never give up on your dreams - work toward them!

Watch for My Upcoming Article in WOW! Women on Writing

January 23, 2007 1 comments

Watch for my upcoming article ("How to Keep Track of Your Research") in WOW! Women on Writing next month. When the editor replied to the query I sent, she said my article sounded like a fantastic and needed resource for writers. In addition, she also stated that it sounded like something she could benefit from as well. This acceptance made my day! Later, I submitted the article, and I was ecstatic when she complimented me further. She commented that my article was great, and she even said she loved the blank templates I had sent, which she requested to go with the article. However, what made everything worthwhile was her next e-mail. She mentioned that she was currently interviewing an author and my article inspired her to ask that author how she conducts her research. I've always enjoyed helping fellow writers, and to know I not only helped an editor/writer, but that I inspired her makes the time I put into that article well worth it! Now, I just hope my article helps many other writers when it appears in the February edition of WOW! Women on Writing. This article will also have a download link to blank templates of the tables the article covers. So, not only will you get some helpful information on keeping track of your research, but you'll also get some free bonuses too!

If you happen to read my article, once it's published, please let me know if you found it as helpful as the editor did. You can drop me an e-mail (see my official Web site for the e-mail address) to send your feedback. Or, if you have a profile at MySpace, I'd love it if you send a request to be my friend. Then, once I accept your request, leave me a comment there (Be sure to mention the title of the article so others will know which one you're referring too.)

Yes, I know I was bragging here, but aren't we supposed to brag in our blogs? Moreover, since my blog is about my writing life, what better place to express my joy over an acceptance. Besides, I hope that expressing my excitement over a great acceptance will be an inspiration to other writers. I hope it encourages them to keep submitting no matter how many rejections they get, because this just shows that acceptances like these will help you overcome the rejection part of writing. :)

Until next time, take care and God bless! For all you writers out there… keep on writing and submitting!

My First Phone Interview

January 8, 2007 1 comments

Most of the interviews I do are done via e-mail or fax, but on Friday, January 5, I conducted my very first phone interview. Terri Colombino called me, and we had a delightful chat about her role as Katie on "As the World Turns," as well as her New Year's resolutions.

I knew about the interview a few days in advance, so I spend those few days reading articles on doing phone interviews. I'll admit I was very nervous, but after a few minutes into the call, I begin to feel more comfortable. Terri was very sweet, and she sounded like a very happy and bubbly person. I enjoyed learning more about her, and hearing about her life on and off the set.

Are you a fan of "As the World Turns?" Read my Interview with Terri Colombino, and leave your comments before you leave.

Musings and Query Advice

January 4, 2007 0 comments

Yesterday I received a delightful e-mail from a reader in the Philippines. We had a nice chat, and I hope I was able to help her with her questions. As I've said before, I always enjoy helping other writers. So, don't be shy, send me an e-mail anytime! Not only does it make me feel good to help other writers, but it's also an enjoyment to chat with writers like myself.

This reader informed me that she found my Web site by reading some of the articles I wrote. In essence, she said my Web site was so helpful she bookmarked it for later reference. In addition, she expressed that it was a blessing she got my name. Needless to say, her e-mail made my day! It's always nice to know you were able to help someone :)

On another note, today, I was reading a newsletter I subscribed to (Writing Etc.), and the article in that edition of Writing Etc. was regarding query letters. After reading the article, I found I could relate to a lot of it. For example, the author said, "Well over 99 percent of all queries reaching the Filbert Publishing offices are completely contrary to our guidelines. Don't fit whatsoever." I can't count how many times I've experienced this dilemma since I started accepting submissions for the second edition of "On the Net Resource Guide for Writers," and my e-zine, Coffee Break for Writers. In fact, just a couple days ago a writer sent a submission for the e-zine, but she failed to read the guidelines, because she sent her submission as a Word attachment. The guidelines clearly state that the only attachments we accept are PDF attachments. I had no choice but to delete this writer's submission unread, simply because she did not follow the guidelines. If she had of followed the guidelines, I would have viewed her submission.

Another piece of advice Beth Ann Erickson gave in her article is "be courteous and professional." She goes on to say, "I've had writers chew me out, then expect me to hire them." Unfortunately, I can relate to this as well… A few months ago I received a total of approximately 15 articles for the second edition of "On the Net Resource Guide for Writers," and these articles all came from the same author. I didn't mind that at all, but the author was aware that her submissions would be on speculation. This means there is no guarantee that all or any of the articles would be accepted.

I did take the time to read each one of the author's submissions, but upon review of them, I could only accept approximately 10 of the 15 articles. The reason I couldn't accept them all was because some of them did not fit my editorial needs, and a few of the others had too may grammar mistakes.

I e-mailed the author detailing which articles I would accept for publication, and I clarified that I needed her to add a little bit of information to one of the articles in order for it to be accepted. She responded saying she would add the information to that one article within a few days. I e-mailed her back saying that was perfectly okay, and I collected the information I would need from her to send a written contract and payment (upon publication).

A few days later, this author e-mailed me back, but she didn't send the information she said she would send. Instead, she questioned my rejection of five of her 15 articles. I politely responded explaining my reasons for rejecting the five articles, and she responded again, but this time she was very rude and asked me to withdraw the articles I had accepted. Without hesitation, I withdrew the accepted articles. I done this without hesitation because one, the fact that she was rude for no reason showed me she didn't know how to be professional, which her cover letter showed me that she was (or at least I though she was). And two, after being nice to her, I didn't appreciate being treated like that.

I gathered from the author's e-mails that she was unhappy about the rejections, because she had sent so many at once, but she knew and understood that she was sending them all on spec. Please friends, if I or any other editor rejects a submission or submissions from you, know that it's not personal. The article most likely didn't meet our needs at that time, but if you're professional and courteous, you could be accepted in the future; just keep trying. As a writer myself, I know how frustrating rejections can be, and this is what makes it harder for me to send rejections to other writers. However, I also know from being a writer that you should respect editors, because they have a tendency to talk amongst other editors.

To find out more tips for submitting your query letters, read Erickson's "Query FAQs" in the January 1, 2007 edition of Writing Etc.. Following her advice will not only increase your chances of acceptance, but it will also increase the chances that your query will be read.

Best wishes,
Misti Sandefur

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2007 1 comments

Technically, it's after midnight, but to me it's still New Years, so, before I go to bed I would like to wish you a happy New Year! I hope 2007 brings you much success and happiness in whatever you do, and most of all, I hope 2007 brings you good health!

I've not really written anything for a couple days. I guess you could say I've taken a couple days vacation during the holidays, but later tonight, I'll be back to my normal writing routine.

It has been nice this year, and I had to take a few days off to enjoy it. My 19-year-old stepson drove in from North Carolina to be with us over Christmas, so this was another reason I haven't written anything in a couple days. Plus, my husband also took a week's vacation from his employment -- something he's never done before. I still had to write the daily updates last week for "As the World Turns," so I did continue that, and during that time I gave my husband some "alone time" with his son. My official vacation actually started on Friday when "As the World Turns" was pre-empted due to college football, then it was pre-empted again on New Year's Day due to the Gator Bowl.

Since my stepson was in, we all (including my children) had a great holiday! It would be nice if we could do this every year, but I'm sure if the price of gas continues to increase, my stepson won't be able to make the drive every year. However, he did talk to us about coming back to live here in Southern Illinois, and we hope he does decide to do this. We've offered him a home until he can find a job and get on his feet, but after that my husband told him he will have to at least contribute to the bills until he finds a place of his own. He wants to follow in his dad's footsteps and become a mechanic, so for Christmas we helped him get the tools and equipment he would need to get started. As for my stepdaughter, she also decided to follow in her dad's footsteps by joining the military. The only difference is she went into the Navy and not the Marine Corps, but my husband says it's pretty much all still the same and we're honored that she's chosen the military for her future. Just before Christmas all the paperwork was signed, so she is officially a member of the Navy now, and after graduation this year she will begin boot camp.

I hope your holiday season was just as wonderful! Feel free to comment and share your holiday season if you like. I'm off to bed now to enjoy my last few hours of vacation. Until next time, never give up on your dreams -- work toward them!

Hugs,
Misti Sandefur
